Individual Psychotherapy

People seek individual therapy or counselling for many reasons. Sometimes, a serious mental health problem has interrupted your ability to function in an important area (e.g., work, school, etc.).

Alternatively, you may be functioning well, but unhappy in your life because of a current life stressor(s), life transitions, or even something significant from your past that remains unresolved. You might even just need to get whatever it is off your chest.

A final reason to seek out therapy or counselling, is not because anything is wrong, but because you want to grow in a certain area of your life (e.g., optimizing self-esteem, improving the balance in your life, and learning how to listen to your inner voice).

At Jalbert Psychological and Counselling Services, we can help you to improve your functioning, navigate life stressors and transitions with improved insight and coping, and even tap into your ‘best self’.

Psychological Assessment

Divider

Not everyone who comes to therapy requires a full psychological assessment. Often, an intake assessment is sufficient to get working on the reason you’ve come to treatment. At times however, the picture is a bit (or a lot!) more complicated than it seems on the surface. In these situations, a full psychological assessment can really help to clarify what is going on. Other times, people come to us specifically because they want a full psychological assessment. That’s okay too.

Psychological assessments usually involve a combination of talk (getting the details of the issue, your history and asking questions to assess diagnostic symptoms), and paper-and-pencil testing/online. Rest assured, there are no right and wrong answers and you can’t fail!

Either way, we’ll be sure to let you know if we think it would be important or helpful to do. Ultimately, the choice is always yours.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a type of therapy that focuses on understanding the relationship between what you think, what you feel, and what you do. CBT is evidence-based, meaning that it has been rigorously tested and shown to be effective for most mental health problems. By understanding how thoughts, feelings and behavior are connected, we help you to shift your mindset and change your behavior to get you to your goal of feeling better.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)-Informed

DBT is another evidence-based treatment that focuses on balancing acceptance and change, learning how to manage emotions, both in the short-and long-term, and navigate relationships in healthy ways. It was originally developed for individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder, but has since been researched and shown to be effective in many kinds of problems, including anxiety and depression.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT is a form of treatment that focuses on mindful awareness of our thoughts and emotions, as well as clarifying our values and helping us to move in the direction of those values. In other words, it helps us to “walk the talk” in areas that are important to us.
